How it works

From a bill on the side to paid.

Bill Pal links people who are short on a bill with people happy to chip in. Here's what happens on each side, and how the money moves.

If you want to help

Chipping in

01
Swipe through real bills

Each card shows a first name, town, the supplier, what the bill is for, how much is left and when it's due. Filter by electricity, gas, water or broadband, and by place.

02
Choose an amount

Pick £5, £10, £20 or clear what's left. You'll see exactly who gets paid and which reference it uses before you go any further.

03
Approve it in your banking app

Bill Pal hands you over to your own bank. You check the details and approve it there, the same way you'd approve any payment.

04
The supplier gets paid

Your bank sends it by Faster Payment to the supplier's own account, against that bill's reference. The bill's total goes down, and the person gets a notification that someone helped.

If you need a hand

Posting a bill

01
Scan your bill

Take a photo of the bill in the app. It reads the supplier, amount, due date and reference for you, and you check them over.

02
Say a little about it

Add a short note if you'd like, such as hours being cut at work. Only your first name, town and household size go on the card.

03
We check it

The team checks the bill against its photo and makes sure the supplier is on our list. You'll get a notification when it's live.

04
Help comes off what you owe

Every chip-in is paid straight to your supplier with your reference, so it shows up on your account. You can have one open bill at a time.

The money

How payments work

Bill Pal never holds anyone's money. There's no wallet and no balance. Payments are made through Open Banking by a regulated payment provider, from the helper's bank straight to the supplier.

We only pay suppliers we've checked. We add each supplier's bank details ourselves and check them before they're used. We never use bank details from a photo of a bill, so a doctored bill can't send money somewhere else.

A chip-in is a gift. It's not a loan, and nobody pays it back. Once your bank has sent it, it can't be taken back through Bill Pal.
